“A Third Culture Kid (TCK) is a person who has spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside the parents’ culture. The TCK frequently builds relationships to all of the cultures, while not having full ownership in any. Although elements from each culture may be assimilated into the TCK’s life experience, the sense of belonging is in relationship to others of similar background.“ (Pollock, David C.; Van Reken, Ruth E. (2009). Third culture kids: growing up among worlds, Rev. Ed.. London: Nicholas Brealey. p. 13. ISBN 978-1-85788-525-5.)
Does this sound familiar? We would like to apply the concepts Pollock and Van Reken introduced in their influential book to our experience to gain more insight into our lives as cultural nomads.
Hi all, this is andres…many thanks to Oya for setting this up; looks great.
Seems to me the Pollock/Vanreken book is more akin to our experience as codas; very interesting description. The extension to coda+ is the terrain we are exploring, as minority/immigrant codas in the U.S. (I don’t like the work “minority”, “people of color” is a little better, but so awkward when trying to use in actual language (ie., “codas of color”, but I can live with it); but labels aren’t that important for us, now (I would argue); more important is discussing the concepts entailed, then later finding right language.
Anyone else have reactions to Pollock/Vanreken and applicability to coda+ ?? (P.S. I don’t have the book and haven’t read it so I’m just chiming in from a distance; amazon usually has reader comments; if there are any there, perhaps they can be imported onto this website??; just a thought
hugs to all
Andres, I am pdfing the relevant chapters to share them on google files. I plan putting all the reading material in this to share it among closed group members.
Hello All, this is Andres; just checking if anyone has entered any comments; stay in touch!
